Canada Wildrye is a cool-season, native grass that prefers moist sites. This perennial bunch grass has very good seedling vigor and early spring growth, which make it easy to establish and cover ground rapidly. It also has some shade tolerance and will grow in sandy soil. The seed head is a nodding spike that matures in July. Canada Wildrye leaf blades are flat with a rough upper surface and finely toothed margins.
Canada Wildrye makes a good companion in a prairie mixture. The plant has ornamental value and the dried seed heads look great in flower arrangements.
