What we know today as Rupp Seeds has at its roots, a very diverse
family farming operation that was run by Sylvan L. Rupp, his wife
Pearl, and their seven children. The Rupp family produced and locally
marketed corn, soybeans, popcorn and strawberries along with cattle
and hogs, typical of the traditional family farm in the mid 1900's.
Sylvan’s interest was clearly demonstrated in a family heirloom
that he created during grade school – a book of detailed,
hand-drawn sketches of plants he found both on and off the farm.
His interest in plants and farming led him to start the “Sylvan
L. Rupp Seed Farm” in 1946, which began selling hybrid corn
seed, along with producing and marketing public soybean, wheat and
oats varieties to area farmers.
As the youngest of the children, Roger L. Rupp had opportunity
to “grow up” along with the seed business. His entrepreneurial
spirit and keen interest in seeds naturally led him to become involved
in the business. In 1972, Roger became a partner in the company,
which was now known simply as “Rupp Seed Farm”. As a
result of Roger’s interest in plant breeding and research,
the company began to develop a line of Rupp brand corn seed hybrids
and soybean varieties. For more than a decade, the company’s
focus was on the sale of grain and forage seed products to row crop
farmers. Today this remains a key part of the business, with an
active dealer network in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana.
In 1985, Roger began pursuing another interest as a seedsman within
the seed industry – marketing vegetable seeds to commercial
vegetable growers. During the past two decades, the company has
become a key provider of the best vegetable genetics to wholesale
producers, fresh market growers and the processing industry. With
over 1200 vegetable varieties from all the major vegetable breeders
in our catalog, Rupp Seeds is uniquely positioned to provide growers
with an excellent varietal selection.
